WhatsApp does not plan to follow Apple’s lead from scanning photos on users’ devices for child abuse footage. A WhatsApp CEO calls Apple’s plan ‘a privacy setback’.
WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart thinks Apple’s new software is ‘the wrong approach’. “We’ve had computers for decades, and there has never been a mandate to scan the private files on each device for illegal content. This is not how the software works in the free world.”
Like other experts, Cathcart fears governments will require Apple to deploy similar software to scan for different types of content as well.
