Breakthrough in divided Washington: agreement on infrastructure

Joe Biden

A breakthrough in bitterly divided Washington. Republicans and Democrats have agreed to invest heavily in the ageing infrastructure. That’s special: normally, the Republican Party does everything it can to thwart President Biden. The US Senate has now approved a $1 trillion investment.

According to correspondent Erik Mouthaan, an election promise from President Biden is being fulfilled. “Biden had promised to break the stalemate between left and right. That has now been achieved for the first time. Some Republicans agree because both sides see the need to improve America’s roads, public transport and water management.”

The investment, voted for by a large majority of 100 senators, is well below the $2300 billion proposed by Biden. In particular, measures to switch to green energy were removed from the plan under pressure from Republican politicians representing states where fossil fuels are extracted.
